The Urgha Aire is almost complete, in time for the visitor season. The Trust, with Urgha Grazings has built 6 serviced pitches on land next to the Recycling Site. An aire is a motorhome stopover. It differs from a campsite in having no toilets/showers as the majority of visiting vehicles are now self-contained. The site takes advantage of the adjacent recycling facilities and chemical waste point. It introduces a new grey waste point for sink and shower water and electric hook-ups. Whilst the view out over East Loch Tarbert is great, we have planted trees to the west to obscure the industrial area. The upside is that the site is within walking distance of the hotels and shops leading to more visitor spend in the local economy.
There has been much discussion in community consultation events how the influx of campervans can be managed. This project secured 70% funding from Visit Scotland’s Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund to better-manage the visitors in and around Tarbert. With both early and late ferries, there is demand for somewhere to stop near the ferry-port. The aire will hopefully free up space in the main Tarbert carpark as well as providing one central location to service visiting vehicles.
