There are many invasive plant species on Harris and the wider area, probably the most recognisable is Rhododendron ponticum with evergreen glossy foliage and clusters of bright pink flowers. This plant poses a serious risk to native flora. It out-competes most native plants, blocking light and hosts a pathogen called Phytophthora, which can kill native tree and plant species. It is also toxic to most herbivores.
Staff at NHT have been conducting trials which include drilling holes or making incisions into the stems and injecting a small amount of herbicide solution. This method is targeted at one species so there is minimal collateral damage and early signs show it is extremely effective.
