Build it Yourself – Self-build in North Harris

The North Harris Trust is excited to offer two new self-build plots for development. The quarter acre plots  can be provided at significant discount from market value.  It is hoped  that this will allow people to build their own home who would otherwise be hamstrung by large up-front capital costs. This is an alternative approach to addressing the affordability and availability problems facing those looking for housing in Harris.

The plots lie on the main spinal route and so have easy access to both Stornoway and Tarbert. Electricity connection has been made to site and water pipes installed to the main. The access track connects the main road up to the elevated plots with views out over Loch Seaforth.

“In Harris, budding self-builders will always face two initial hurdles – the cost of preparing the site for building and the cost of connecting to services” says Kirsty MacKay Chair of The North Harris Trust, “In Ardvourlie, we have taken those two worries away, making self-build a more realistic option. We look forward to these sites turning into much-needed homes for the North Harris community

The plots will be marketed to those already living and working in the North Harris, as well as those wishing to move or return to the island due to work opportunities.  Anyone interested in the plots should complete and return the Expression of Interest Form below. All applications will be considered and reviewed against funder’s objectives.

Housing is an issue that the local community regularly raises in public meetings. The North Harris Trust continues to work with Hebridean Housing Partnership to develop more social housing and has recently grown its own affordable housing stock with the successful completion of two new affordable homes for rent at Meavaig, North Harris.  These self-build plots will hopefully provide yet another way to meet the housing need.

Part of the sale price will be returned to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in order to replenish the UK Share Prosperity Fund and provide further opportunity to fund more serviced plots in the Outer Hebrides.

Even as the eggy car becomes increasingly difficult, the overall tone remains whimsical and cartoonish. The game avoids excessive difficulty spikes, the movements are smooth, and the car maintains its bouncing, enjoyable feel.
