The North Harris community set up The NHT in August 2002.

Following a ballot, in which the community voted overwhelmingly in favour of purchasing the land, the Trust successfully bid for the 55,000 acre North Harris Estate. In 2004 the people in the three townships, Scaladale, Maraig and Rhenigidale decided that it would be feasible to purchase their estate. So after months of dealys, the purchase of 7,500 acres of Loch Seaforth Estate finally became a reality on 23rd February 2006. Bringing the Estate up to 62,500 acres. The Estate includes approx 130 crofts and 17 townships, including the main population centre Tarbert. The Trust consists of directors from within the community. The John Muir Trust, a conservation body which works closely with local communities, willingly agreed to become a partner and supported the project.
