Small Business unit project

The island
The Isle of Harris is a fantastic place to move to, to escape from the rat race. A history rich in crafts and artisan skills, the island’s dramatic viking past is still evident and out of all of the islands of the Outer Hebrides, Harris is certainly the jewel in the crown. Its white sandy beaches rival those of the Caribbean, while rocky, snow-peaked mountains tower over peat moors and fertile plains. This amazing landscape draws an increasing number of tourists each year.

The area’s rich in wildlife, from golden eagles and dolphins to red deer and whales, and the community is warm and friendly. A new school has recently been built in the main village, Tarbert, and the roads are empty and the night skies clear, making it the perfect location for families wanting to connect to a simpler way of life.

The opportunity
To encourage small businesses to the community, three eco-friendly units have been built. Located in Harris’ main village, Tarbert, the units were available for a new or growing business to take on at a rent of under £3,000 a year. The key selection criteria for tenants is whether they can create new employment opportunities.

The units are powered using solar electricity and qualify for business rates relief, so you can take on the 66 metre squared space with few overheads.

As of October 2015, all three units are in occupation
