North Harris Trust consists of directors elected from within the community. The Trust has forged strong partnerships with two principal organisations, The John Muir Trust and Amhuinnsuidhe Castle Estate.

The John Muir Trust is a conservation body, which works closely with local communities to retain wild natural environments.

Amhuinnsuidhe Castle Estatepurchased the castle and the fishing rights of the former North Harris Estate when the Trust purchased the land. This collaboration between the community, conservation interests and the private sector is a totally new approach to community led natural resource management.

Our Achievement
We, the people of North Harris chased the dream that we could own the land on which we live and work…. our own land. The dream became a reality on 21st March 2003 when the Estate transferred from private ownership to community ownership. The community seized a unique opportunity when the 55,000 acre North Harris Estate was placed on the market in April 2002. The innovative nature of the final agreement has served as a landmark in Scottish land ownership.

The community-run North Harris Trust is now the custodian of this rugged, beautiful area of the Western Isles of Scotland

We are confident that through direct ownership, we can develop and safeguard our rich natural and cultural heritage for the benefit of the community and the many people who visit this area.

Our Challenge
Historically, North Harris has suffered from depopulation and lack of opportunity. This has happened for a variety of reasons. In the past, our ancestors were forced to emigrate to make a living. At present, many young adults leave the island to further their education but very few return because there are limited employment options. A tremendous challenge for the North Harris Trust is to reverse this trend and to enable young families to set up home here. Although there are some employment opportunities, these need to be strengthened and diversified in order to create a more secure economic future. Everyone who has an affinity with North Harris can play a part in safeguarding its future, both as a wonderful area of unsurpassed natural beauty and as a home for a strong and resilient community.
