21st May: Black Throated Divers

This-morning there were a pair of Black Throated Divers on the Lacasdail Lochs, now in their summer plumage. Also a few Dippers around the loch.

Annual General Meeting – date set

The Annual General Meeting of both North Harris Trust and its wholly-owned subsidiary company – North Harris Trading Company will be held on Monday June 17th at the Harris Hotel in Tarbert. The Trading meeting starts at 19:00, with the main Trust meeting at 19:30. Come along and find out what we’ve been up to this year.

15th May: Swallows

Last weekend a group of Swallows were seen at Kyles Scalpay, likely to have just arrived from the long trip up from Africa!

10th Anniversary celebrated

April 26th has come and gone. The celebrations are over for another 10 years.

The main event was held in Tarbert Community Centre. Manran, one of the hottest new bands in the Highlands took center stage supported by local Lewis band “Face the West”. The concert proved very popular with both locals and visitors alike. Both bands were brilliant and after some initial “shyness” the community centre was soon bouncing. Over 220 people attended the concert and feedback has all been very positive.

The following day, Matt our Ranger lead a guided walk from Amhuinsuidhe to Huisinish -despite precious little sleep. The walk had a high turnout and the weather remained favourable for most of it. Around 30 people took part in the walk some of whom had danced the previous night away at the our concert. The walk was enjoyed by all.

The Amhuinnsuide Castle Estate joined in on celebrations by offering guided tours of the Castle on Saturday 27th April. This provided a rare opertunity to see inside the builing which has had such a prominent role in the history of North Harris.

9th May: Arctic Terns & Porpoises

On the guided walk out from Hushinish to Traigh Mheilen, in the Sound of Scarp were the first Arctic Terns I’ve seen this year – fresh back from the Antarctic! We also spotted a porpoise and a couple of Great Northern divers, as well as the usual suspects – Oyster Catchers, Snipe, Shags, Cormorants, Gannets & Gulls. Cracking weather too!

7th May: Little Egret

Not a native, but starting to become common in southern England. This one’s obviously been blown off track somewhat. Spotted in Geocrab (South Harris) -it looks like a small Heron – but completely white

23rd April – Mountain Hare

Out eagle monitoring in Glen Meavaig yesterday, came across three hares in very quick succession – they’re currently part way through their moult – perhaps better camouflaged like this than at any other time of year!

18th April – Lapwings & Great Northern Divers

Today on the road to Hushinish, just before Govig, I spotted a pair of Lapwings just by the road. Down in the bay Hushinish there was a small group of Great Northern Divers, and a couple of shags.

Our tenth year

We are fast approaching April 26th – the 10th Anniversary weekend. In the build-up to the big concert with Manran and Face the West a few articles will be appearing in the local press.
