Significant progress is now being made across a range of renewable projects.

The on-shore wind development at Monan now has full planning permission. Last week the Trust was awarded Big Lottery funding of £900,000 and now the Trading Company are concentrating in raising the remainder of the required funding and in choosing the type of turbine.

Land is being prepared at Kyles Scalpay for the biomass project. This involves a three year rotation cycle of cropping. The land has now been turned over, drainage ditches made and we are soon to commence the next stage of planting the trees.

Four water systems have been identified as possible locations for micro-hydro schemes and Highlands and Islands Community Energy Company have offered to appoint a consultant to look at the feasibility of using each of these systems to produce renewable power. It is anticipated that this study will be carried out during early summer.

We continue to try to contribute to the general community renewable sector and have given presentations of our work both locally and further afield in Germany. The community sector in Denmark and Germany is well established and offers several models which could be transferred to Scotland.
